Oiticica's Instructions

IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) July 2014
As part of "Oiticica's Propositions."
This work was co-curated with NCAD, IMMA and Projecto Hélio Oiticica

Previous incarnations of Oiticica's Instructions took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1968 and University of Sussex 1969.

This version was an hour-long performance piece devised from an interpretation of Oiticica's 5 Instructions.
Students from the NCAD BA (Fine Art) and MA (Art in the Contemporary World) took part.

In preparation for this interpretation we read and discussed Antonin Artaud's No More Masterpieces, and a section from Edward Said's Orientalism. We met via skype and in person a number of times, we also met with Jessica Gogan and Luiz Guilherme Vergara of Projecto Hélio Oiticica via IMMA.

There was an ancillary de-materialised interpretation carried out by Eimear Walshe and Lucy Bowen.

SCRIPT

This is not a performance.
This ! is not a performance.

Oiticica’s Instructions are a problem.
To which there are a multitude of solutions.
This is not one of them.

This is a slowly concreting proposition for public participation
This is an insult to participation
This is a cloak to participation
This is a tent to participation
